Pulmonary rehabilitation is not just for the severely ill

Rehabilitation can work even if you're not severely ill, but you feel your disease is limiting you: you walk less, climb fewer stairs, go out less often, need to stop more often to breathe, and are more afraid of exertion.

Pulmonary rehabilitation doesn't cure lung disease or undo damage that's already happened, but it can help you get more out of what you can do today: become stronger, move more, function better, and reduce your risk of exacerbations and hospitalizations.

Why does it matter?

Less shortness of breath during activity

Rehabilitation can help you walk more, stop less often, and feel safer moving around.

Fewer exacerbations and hospitalizations

For some lung diseases, especially COPD, research shows rehabilitation after an exacerbation can significantly reduce the risk of readmission.

Starting from where you are

You don't need to be fit to start. Rehabilitation is built gradually, based on your abilities and your health condition.

What does research show?

COPD

≈ 50% less

risk of readmission after exacerbation

Pulmonary fibrosis & ILD

≈ 40m further

in 6-minute walk test

Bronchiectasis

from 2 to 1

fewer exacerbations per year, in one study

Pulmonary hypertension

≈ 65m further

in 6-minute walk test in supervised programs

Transplant candidates

per 100m more

linked to shorter stay after transplant

After transplant

85 min/day

walking after structured training, vs. 54 without

Data based on research and reviews in pulmonary rehabilitation. Results vary from person to person, and rehabilitation eligibility should be determined with your medical team.
